- Immunotherapy: Enabling our Bodies to Survive Against Cancer
Immunotherapy is a phenomenal new method in the advancement of possible treatments for patients. We’ve seen it act as a homerun style effect when immunotherapy has performed. Unfortunately, only a small number of patients see these dramatic reactions. We think the most interesting part of immunotherapy research will be how to achieve these home-made results in all patients and all cancers, including gynecological one's Cancers we're handling.
Immunotherapy works by introducing substances to the cancer patient's body to enhance the immune system's potential to destroy cancer cells. The immune system battles bacteria and infection well, but it is programmed to avoid fighting its cells, like cancer cells. Immunotherapy tricks it to move on in the battle. Immunotherapy is also used as an alternative to traditional cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation. However, the study is still in its infancy, so it is hard to tell whether immunotherapy will take the cancer treatment position someday, or whether it will continue to be used as a secondary aid.
Identifying Immunotherapy
The immune system is essential for maintaining track of all toxins present in our bodies. When new materials are introduced that the immune system does not know, they are targeted. A properly functioning immune system should be capable of reacting to and destroying anything that contains a foreign material, including germs or cancer cells.
The thing is, the cancer cells are sly. Often the immune system doesn't see them as unusual because they don't vary enough from normal cells. The immune system recognizes cancer cells at other times but is not powerful enough to kill them. And often the cancer cells themselves also release compounds that hold the immune system in place, so the cells are ignored. This is where immunotherapy comes in. It is intended to improve the immune system of the patient and give it the love it needs to recognize and fight cancer cells. This can be achieved in various ways.
Challenges to Gynaecological Cancer for Immunotherapy
To date, immunotherapy has had the greatest impact on immune-responsive cancers such as melanoma (skin cancer). Unfortunately, we also have to see these high response rates around the board across all forms of cancer. Specifically, when it comes to gynecological cancers, I see three major obstacles that interfere with the effective advancement of immunotherapy care. Since immunotherapy is still in experimental stages, the majority of immunotherapy for gynecological cancers is only available in clinical trials. I urge all patients to consider clinical trials, particularly when immunotherapy is involved.
But several factors (age, stage of cancer, place of treatment) can interfere with eligibility.
Are you interested in taking part in a clinical trial or learning more about immunotherapy? If yes, then feel free to contact us.
Right now, immunotherapy is a hot field of study in gynecological cancers because of the promising results we have seen with certain types of cancers. We expect to see an improvement in immunotherapy progress across the board in gynecological cancers over the next 5-10 years. The only problem is that efficient research requires time, funding, teamwork, and, most of all, patients. Unfortunately, these services are not always readily accessible, which can interfere with steady progress in science.
Just time could tell us…
As we have mentioned earlier, it is still too early in the developmental stages to know the path that immunotherapy is going to take. However, we expect progress to be made in the next few years, assuming that studies and clinical trials will continue to produce positive results.
